Run KBBS & Use Your Computer, too!
You can run KBBS in the background...
While callers browse your KBBS, play Door Games, Upload, or
Download files, you can use your computer for others things, too.
Point is, you might need use your computer at the same time that
a caller is using your KBBS. This is possible, if you have the
"right computer setup."
Requirements...
Computer must be a 386 DOS based system with at least 4 megabytes
of memory. It works with a 386DX running at 40MHz here, but
should work fine on 386SX systems, as long as you have DOS 5.0 or
better, and are running Windows 3.1 in the 386 enhanced mode. If
your system does not meet these requirements, then you will not
be able to run KBBS as a background task on your computer. Of
course, if your computer exceeds this, like maybe a 486 or
Pentium, with DOS 6, or whatever, then read on.
Windows 3.1 features...
DOS style programs can run in a Window, can run "minimized," and
can run as a "background" task. This allows KBBS to run, wait
for a call, answer the phone, let callers do whatever they
desire, and all of this while you are using your computer for
others things. KBBS is designed to be small in size, run fast
and efficiently, and not use up too much disk space or CPU time.
Chances are, while you are reading this, our computer is doing
other things right now, besides running KBBS!
How to Run KBBS in the Background...
We are working on supplying an automatic installation program for
KBBS to run in the background in Windows 3.1. For now, you will
have to use the Windows 3.1 options to set everything up. You
don't have to be a "rocket scientist" to figure it all out, but
there are a few details that may take a little time and thinking
on your part. You won't blow up your computer, or destroy any
files if you mess up, but it won't work unless you follow the
instructions carefully. If you have a terminal program that
allows you to capture this file, or print things as you view
them, it might be a good idea to do this now, or at least take
notes. Detailed instructions follow:
1. If you have not already done so, get your KBBS working from
the DOS prompt, so that typing KHOST gets everything going
the way you like it, your modem answers the phone, and you
are satisfied with your KBBS.
2. If KBBS is running, select [X] Exit to DOS from the [S]ystem
Menu, or "reboot" your system so your can start from DOS.
3. Change to the directory that is needed to run Windows. Be
sure that you start Windows 3.1 by typing "win /3" so that
you are in the "386 Enhanced Mode."
4. Click on FILE and select NEW.
5. Program filename: KBB.PIF
6. Window Title: KBBS
7. Start-up Directory: \KISSBBS
